The Maersk Halifax has become the first large container ship retrofitted as a dual-fuel vessel capable of operating on methanol, with the conversion completed in 88 days at Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard, China, by the end of October 2024. The retrofit included modifications by MAN Energy Solutions, such as engine upgrades, new fuel tanks, and hull extension by 15 meters, increasing capacity to 15,690 TEU. Maersk aims for net-zero emissions by 2040 and sees retrofitting as a key strategy in transitioning from fossil fuels to low-emission alternatives.
