Starting next month, the U.S. will eliminate the de minimis exemption for imports from China and Hong Kong, meaning these goods will be subject to duties unless they enter through the international postal system, where a 30% duty or $25 fee (increasing to $50 after June 1) will apply. This change aims to combat illicit shipping practices exploiting the exemption. The de minimis rule, which allows duty-free entry for packages under $800, has previously benefited companies like Shein and Temu by reducing shipping costs, but the administration is now focusing on enhancing duty collection systems.
