Bechtel has commenced nuclear vitrification operations at the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) in Hanford, Washington, successfully converting the first batch of hazardous waste from the Manhattan Project and Cold War into stable glass. This achievement significantly reduces environmental risks associated with legacy tank waste. The WTP, the largest radioactive waste treatment facility globally, exemplifies effective nuclear waste stabilization for long-term disposal. Bechtel collaborated with various partners to realize this vision, aiming to protect the Columbia River and future generations. The facility will process an average of 5,300 gallons of waste daily.
