The U.S. and Japan have established a framework to secure critical minerals and rare earths essential for their industries, as outlined in a nonbinding agreement signed by President Trump and Prime Minister Takaichi. This plan includes creating a U.S.-Japan Critical Minerals Supply Security Rapid Response Group, focusing on specific minerals, identifying supply vulnerabilities, and potentially mutual stockpiling and recycling technologies. The initiative aims to reduce reliance on China and prevent uncoordinated strategies. A similar agreement was also signed with Australia to enhance the critical mineral supply chain.
